Imagine playing basketball in silence. That’s what the Gallaudet Bisons — the only deaf university basketball team in the world — do and they do it well. This year the team went 18-2 in the NEAC games giving them home court advantage in the Semi Final tournament. They have a lot going for them — Senior Joshua McGriff ranks third in Division III blocked shots. Coach Kevin Kovacs was named NEAC’s Coach of the Year and the team is ranked high for it’s stellar defense. According to Coach Kovacs, these young men use their hands to communicate all day long so “there’s no reason that our hands shouldn’t be up at all times.” Hard work, determination and a storied history drive these young men forward, feeling the beat of the music through the gym floor and relying on keen eye contact, facial expressions and body language to communicate with each other on the court. Although they lost to Morrisville State in a very close game, knocking them out of the March Madness tournament this year, Kovacs and the team have already set their sights on getting to the NCAA Division III Tournament next year.
